A word from our President

September 2007

Welcome to the FLORIDA SCHOLASTIC HOCKEY LEAGUE'S "10TH. SEASON OF EXCELLENCE".  We can all look back on the accomplishments of the FSHL's previous 9 years with great pride. With each successive season, we continue to elevate the FLORIDA SCHOLASTIC HOCKEY LEAGUE to new heights.  Last year, for the first time, the League recognized its outstanding goalies with GOALTENDER OF THE YEAR awards in both DIVISION I and DIVISION II.   And, for the first time, the FSHL hosted 2 SAHOF HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENTS (SAHOF HS DIVISION I and the innaugural SAHOF HS DIVISION II) during the same weekend in March 2007.

- CONGRATULATIONS to the 2006-07 SAHOF DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONS:  WEST BOCA HIGH SCHOOL

. CONGRATULATIONS to the 2006-07 PANTHERS CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS:

DIVISION I: NORTH BROWARD PREP
DIVISON II: TARAVELLA HIGH SCHOOL

. True to the "Scholastic" in the FLORIDA SCHOLASTIC HOCKEY LEAGUE, the League took great pride in awarding FSHL collegiate scholarships to FOUR (4) deserving students. CONGRATULATIONS to:
FRESHMAN:  GARY KOROSHEC ( SAINT THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL )
SOPHOMORE:  JEFFREY ALBECK ( BOCA RATON HIGH SCHOOL )

JUNIOR:  ZACKARY TOYOTA ( CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL )
SENIOR:  CHARLES CRESPO ( SAINT THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL )
The scholarships are funded by proceeds from the ANNUAL FSHL GOLF CLASSIC

. The FSHL again awarded MVP awards to TWO (2) of its players.
CONGRATULATIONS to the 2006-07 FSHL MVPs:

DIVISION I:  CONNOR CAFFERTY ( STONEMAN-DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL )
DIVISION II:  WESLEY SUSKIND ( UNIVERSITY SCHOOL )

- The FSHL for the 1st. time awarded GOALTENDER OF THE YEAR to: 

DIVISION I:  KEVIN BAUMAN ( CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL )

DIVISION II:  SEAN TENNYSON ( TARAVELLA HIGH SCHOOL )                                        

 

. The FSHL shows its appreciation for all FSHL coaches by awarding COACH OF THE YEAR to TWO (2) of its coaches.
CONGRATULATIONS to the 2005-06 FSHL COACHES OF THE YEAR:

DIVISION I: JOE LAROCCO ( STONEMAN-DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL )
DIVISION II: MIKE TOYOTA ( CORAL GLADES HIGH SCHOOL )

. Florida sent its 6th. Statewide High School team to compete in the 23rd. Annual Chicago Showcase. The Showcase provides a highly competitive national event for elite high school student athletes to be seen by every major hockey program in the United States (including Prep, College: NCAA Division I & III, Juniors, and the NHL). USA Hockey Affiliates honor their high school players by selecting those players who represent their high school team and the ideal of the student athlete. The Showcase consists of 24 teams (over 550 of the top players from across the USA ). Many of Florida 's high school seniors have received offers of opportunities from, college and Junior A and B scouts. The experience proved to be invaluable for any player who wishes to pursue hockey at the next level.

. The ANNUAL FSHL PRESIDENTS CUP TOURNAMENT, the only high school sponsored ice hockey tournament in Florida , attracts teams from around the state, the country, and Canada .

. The FSHL ALL-STAR GAME & SKILLS COMPETITION  - Trophies were awarded for:

FASTEST SKATER:  CONNOR CAFFERTY (STONEMAN-DOUGLAS HS)

STICK HANDLING:  DANIEL ECHEVERRI ( CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL )

GOAL SCORING:  GIANFRANCO RICHTER ( CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL )

GOALTENDING:  KEVIN BAUMAN ( CYPRESS BAY HS)

FSHL ALL-STAR GAME MVP:

NORTH:  MAX GOLDSTEIN ( SPANISH RIVER HIGH SCHOOL )

SOUTH:  JOEY ARLEY ( COOPER CITY HIGH SCHOOL )                                            

. Over 400 people attended the spectacular FSHL year ending ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET "under the bubble" at the MIAMI DOLPHINS training facility. Our sincere thanks to the MIAMI DOLPHINS ORGANIZATION for hosting the event, to PIZZA LOFT for the great food, and COCA COLA for the beverages.  FLORIDA PANTHERS defenseman Bryan Allen provided words of wisdom and direction for our FSHL players, coaches, and parents.  Brian stayed to distribute trophies and pose for photos.

Every year marks another FSHL milestone. In this, the League's "10th. SEASON OF EXCELLENCE", twenty  (20) teams are again registered to participate in two divisions Through all the growth, the FLORIDA SCHOLASTIC HOCKEY LEAGUE remains firmly committed to its goals and ideals. The FSHL is dedicated to providing high school students with a program that promotes academic discipline, respect for authority and for each other, teamwork, development of physical skills, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
The first 9 years have been exhilarating
The future of High School ice hockey in Florida is bright indeed.
